Darkseid wasn't the first alien dictator who had tried to conquer the Earth and it hadn't been his first attempt either. As always his main objective had been to defeat Superman, the World's Greatest Superhero, in single combat on his home ground, while the rest of Earth's champions were busy facing the rest of Apokolips' armies scattered around the globe.

The battle that had wrecked the city of Metropolis had truly been epic, but in the end Darkseid triumphed over the Man of Steel. Bound in chains and shackles, Kal-El, the last son of Krypton, had been executed in a public event broadcast all over the World using Apokolips' holographic technology.

Superheroes and villains alike had been devastated by Superman's death and most of them had simply surrendered or fled. Most of those who had continued to resist were either captured and brought as slaves to Apokolips or made an example of. And to make sure Earth's population had understood the lesson, Darkseid razed Metropolis from the surface of the planet with his bare hands and the power of his Omega beams.

After he was done adding Earth to his empire, Darkseid returned on Apokolips and left our World in the care of his son Kalibak.
