Ignoring the sarcastic tone of his superior's reply, he drifted over to a bank of man-sized opaque tubes on the wall. "Then I assume we are in agreement as to the resolution of Agent Tergo's latest fiasco?"

"It was a damn shame Lilith went rogue," the human said wistfully. "I wonder whether she snapped on her own or if someone got to her."

"Irrelevant," the brain replied dismissively. "The point is that the situation can still be salvaged if we act quickly. Do I have authorization to proceed?"

He nodded. "Yes. Proceed with Alpha level recycle program." With a nod <?> to his assistants, the brain moved over to an open area of the floor. A hologram of a complex control panel appeared around it. Reaching out with his feelers, he began to adjust the settings.

Three of the tubes began to glow with a soft white light. One by one, they seemed to gather energy. Glowing forms could be seen inside through the opaque surface...two full grown women and an infant.

After each tube had had its turn, the glow faded. "Reclamation complete," the brain announced.

"Excellent. Sending the Kryptonian and the child to the appropriate storage facilities." The humanoid forms became glowing white balls that were sucked up a duct on the side of the tube. They shot out into the upper part of the room and drifted sedately in the caverous room...one of the billions of protoforms that they could call on at a moment's notice.

"I just want to check," the Director said. "Decant Shanna so I can make sure she wasn't...damaged by the process."

With the alien equivalent of a shrug, the brain manipulated another control. The dark tube hissed, giving off clouds of gas...and then melted to reveal a well formed humanoid woman with white skin and solid black eyes.

"Morphling designate Q-997F," it replied, coming to attention. "This unit is functioning within acceptable parameters."

The Director sighed morosely. "Yes...yes you are......" The brain never ceased to be amazed at his commander's maudlin sensibilities. "You know that this is for the best," he reminded the human. "If we didn't recycle agents like this, then our job would just be that much harder."

"Put her with the others, Doctor," the Director said to his chief scientist. "And make sure that her memory is erased. In fact, do it twice.
