It had all started as a lark. She had gone out in disguise to relax and relieve some stress. She'd followed the sounds of some music to a bar that was hosting a karaoke event. She'd entered on a whim, just looking to have some fun. No one there knew who she was, so it didn't matter if she embarrased herself. But she hadn't, the audience had loved her performance. so much so that the bar owner had actually asked her to come back.
It probably would have ended there if not for some difficulty with her home life. She'd remembered the offer at a point she just needed to get away for awhile. So she told everyone she was going out of town, but really she just disguised herself and checked into a hotel. Then she called the bar owner and asked if the offer was still on the table. She worked as a singer for the week and found she loved it. It was weird she should have been used to the attention given her fame, but when she was on stage performing it was like nothing else.
And having people recognize her not for the cosmic power lottery she had won, but for her own talents was amazing. She'd all but given up being recognized in the academic world anymore, everybody was far more interested in what Reed thought. When it got to the point that one of the first questions anyone asked her about her research was what he thought of it, she had quietly pulled back from that area.
Even after she returned home from her break she continued performances at the bar once or twice a week as her schedule permitted. She'd slowly built up her reputation and started performing other places as well.
Then came the big break, she'd recieved an invitation for a local talent event similar to American Idol. The catch was she would have to devote some serious time to participate, 12 weeks. She didn't know whether she could afford to put that much time into it given her other life.
