What frightened Superman enough to put the ring on at all, even hesitantly, given all of it's power was simple. As long as the ring was on a finger, it could be removed save by it's owner. However, off the finger it could be put on by anyone with a soul. And while they might have the blackest and darkest of souls, people like Lex or the Joker still had them. Then there is the question on who exactly had a soul? Circe? Etrigan?
If any villains like the former three were to gain a power like this, the world would suffer. He knew the mistakes he could possible make would bad, but likely not even one percent of one percent of what would happen if the wrong person was to get it. So as much as he feared himself with the power of this level, the ring was currently safer on his finger, the off. Till he could get someone to help.
'Still the temptation to say something to help or fix the world is great. Would it be the right thing to use the ring to fix them, in fact would it be the wrong thing to not use it fix things? Or is that a step too far even for Superman? I have tried to use my powers to protect mankind, but with them there is always the urge to do more, to prevent them from making their own mistakes...
I need advice. Yet who could help me?' thought Superman as he tried to figure out what he was going to do.
