The two chosen to be given the power to alter reality were Spider-man for the heroic side and Doctor Octopus for the villainous side. They would have the power to alter reality mentally, consciously or unconsciously. They would be able to alter all reality save for the other person, so Spider-man could not change Doctor Octopus or vice versa. Also when they altered the same person and there is a conflict of their powers, there is created two versions of the person with each one fitting the new realities designed by each subject of the experiment.

 The power would grant them similar powers to many reality warping devices like the Infinity Gems, the Ring of Truth or the Master PC. But be in their minds, bodies and souls.

 To begin the experiment, the aliens had to decide whether to have things operate with a blind run where none of the subjects had knowledge of their power, to inform one or the other or both of the subjects of their powers. As this study is conducted multidimensionally, they could do it all at the same time.

 So they merely had to decide which universe's experiment to watch first with...
