In less than an hour the League had joined together high above the Earth on their orbiting station the watch tower, the length of the meeting table occupied by the heads of the League. Like everyone else who had sat down they all were wearing a black domino mask save a scant few, others to the slight shock of the sitting heroes had somehow mutated slightly. Some with changes like reptilian eyes or scales while others had tails or claws. Sitting at the front of the table Superman looked on while Batman and Wonder Woman got everyone else’s attention to remain calm and quite.
"Somehow these masks have come out of nowhere and attached themselves to our faces, Zatanna has mentioned that they are magical in nature and so far she can’t remove them."
"Yeah? Well that’s funny cuz Sup’s there doesn’t have one!" Green Arrow spoke out angrily from his chair, pointing at Superman like he was the elephant in the room. Even so said finger was now sporting black claws and dark green scales reaching up his arm to the elbow. "How’d you do it Clark, did you heat vision it off or are you a special case like when everything else drops on our laps?!"
Shrugging his wide shoulders the man of steel didn’t know what to say. "I don’t know really… I just offered Lois breakfast this morning and it just, well… Popped off."
"Pff, bullshit!" Gasping and gripping the table the League watched on in surprise when Oliver pushed his chair back to give room to a tail that shot out behind him, ripping a hole in his pants in the process. "WHAT THE FUCK?!" Grimacing again the rest of the heroes could only look on when his ears shot out into lengthy points like a rabbit or donkey.
"Ok, everyone stay calm." Called out the Amazon Princess with her arms out. "Just a theory but… Let’s hold off swearing for a bit, at least until we rule it out as WHY the League are changing."
"Says the chick who’s still perfect in every way…" Scoffed the Huntress, her arms crossed and looking away to hide the night blue scales creeping up her neck and the violet reptilian eyes she now had. Indeed out of all the women at the table Wonder Woman was completely unchanged, which only added heated tempers among the ladies. That is until the doors to the meeting room were flung open and a smiling Zatanna with a mask of her own rushed inside with a large tome in her hands. "I FOUND IT!" Slamming the massive book on the table the Vegas magician scoured through pages to the chapter she was looking for and tapped her finger at the page. "It’s called the Monster Mask."
"Monster Mask? Sounds like a 60’s dance tune."
Snorting at the bad joke Zatanna went over her findings for everyone. "About a thousand years ago there was a mean spirited queen that ruled over a small village, it mentions a fairy arriving in town and placing a mask on her face as punishment for being a big ol’ bag of bitch!" Turning the page she looked up to see everyone paying attention. "Whenever she would act mean, rude or pull off a George Carlin rant the mask would twist her appearance to be just as monstrous as her personality, if she learned her lesson and acted polite and sweet she’d be returned to normal."
"Did she?" Wondered Captain Marvel, his hands holding up his head hearing the story being told. Skipping past a few pages Zatanna lifted the book to show a double page illustration of a fire breathing monster stomping over the village. "No…"
"So what you’re saying is if we act polite and nice to each other we’ll return to normal?"
"Preeeetty much, shouldn’t be too hard."
Standing up from his chair the Dark Knight reached for his belt and pulled out a cell phone, clearing his throat Batman waited for the ring tone to click. "Hello Gotham’s Central Hospital? This is Bruce Wayne, I’d like to donate 50 million dollars to the children’s health care branch, hmm? No this is real, Yes thank you very much too." Setting the phone down the League watched on as the domino mask on his face slowly peeled away and flopped down on the smooth marble table.
"Cheating motherfucker!" Gripped with dizziness Huntress breathed slowly while she felt her shoes burst at the front, clawed toes wiggling out the opening they forced out.
