How to keep divergent tales from the same Storyline straight?

by CorruptionCentral - 1/16/2014 6:10 PM

We have all seen here how a single good idea or Storyline can spawn multiple divergent tales.  Many times the contributors of one tale have very different writing styles and preferences in fan fiction fetishes than the contributors of others yet the Storyline is the same no matter how many variants there are.

My main concern is not disappointing readers open a chapter only to find it has nothing to do with the story they were looking forward to reading or frustrating authors when well meaning contributors add something completely out of context with the story due to them mistaking the tale they added to for another divergent tale from the same base Storyline.

Is there any preferred way to track the divergent stories and keep things straight?  Does anyone have any helpful suggestions or opinions on this subject they would like to share?

Well, it won't stop you from clicking, but I like to write a brief recap of characters and/or situations at the top of each post. Obviously, not an ideal solution, especially for story lines with lots of characters.

Options: For Ring of Truth, I used a category tag for it. Also thought of one for Master PC, but that is less of a problem for it. This is part of the benefits of tags, since if defined in depth one could find all of the chapters you are looking for. But as time goes on, such categories might need to be managed for easier access. This has a benefit as you can go back into your chapters, and usually only your chapters unless you are an editor, and add categories and/or edit your posts. Another option is the idea of being able to either remove the storyline into separate storylines, or with permission, the ability of reports it as separate. Tricky, but possible. Let's also face it, main ideas and storylines borrow from each other at times, if only because they use the same sources. I think Superstories will not likely object to either, as long as it is done in a polite and respectful manner. Because I think that is what they are looking for from the members here. And most if not all of the writers here give it. Save one or two trolls/spammers.

Also I would add to the Search process the ability to choose options with any of the chosen category ( say putting in Spider-man and Harem to get all Spider-man and all Harem episodes) or just those topics together ( Spider-man and Harem to get all Spider-man harem episodes).Just my thoughts and two cents...

gothamalleyviper, thanks (well really thanks to colleem who suggested that I not reveal every buyer at once). There's a thread on the message board if anyone wants to talk about any ideas or has any feedback.
