by BigGuy - 10/31/2012 6:15 PM First, a few general thoughts- i've seen some people worried that their additions to stories are "ruining" things for other authors. I find that's the fun of this- working with new ideas, For example in the Amazing Woman story, I had planned for Black
tiger to meet and seduce Brett, turning him into her own spy on AW. But I love the idea of BT and AW as friends with a past, and particularly the tensions between their life choices. So, instead of Brett going out on patrol against orders, i've set up the
(strong) possibility of him being captured by The Countess- with, possibly, a similar result (or not). So I love when stories go to places I didn't expect. (Honestly, if you want to write a story without other people interfering, submit it to the "Stories"
section- even if you do it chapter by chapter, at least you'll be in control.)
Having said that, a note on 'continuity"- by which I mean, within a story. In stories like the Miss Muscle and Amazing Woman stories, where (although based on old Addventure characters the characters don't have a strong visual that's called to mind, I
always try to provide a physical description. Of course, it can be hard to remember them, 10 chapters later! but it's disconcerting when a character (like Jessica in the Miss Muscle story) is described as blonde, but is suddenly a brunette in a later chapter.
One trick is when you read the current chapter, and you want to add on, there's a "display past chapters" box at the top- that way, you can read through and note names, physical characteristics, etc., that have been established. Unfortunately, once actually
start writing a new chapter, only the chapter before is visible- so sometimes I open up a new window, and keep the complete story in a separate window, so I can refer to it.
None of this is to suggest that I have a problem with little continuity glitches- generally, I just let them slide and try to correct them (or incorporate them) in a future chapter. Also, when a new chapter has an event that contradicts something I thought
was clear, as in CALIBAN's Miss Muscle chapter where he has the Exo-Suitioner alive (I had our Big Bad get a message that 'loose ends were tied up, which I thought was obvious in meaning, but must not have been), I don't feel bad about writing in an explanation
that somewhat contradicts the previous chapter- as long as I can do it artfully (or as close as I get to artfully).
I'd love to hear other's thoughts on this.
