The scientist had been inspired by a sitcom. Red Dwarf had mentioned it in a couple of episodes. Positive Viruses.

 Where Negative Viruses cause harmed and made the infected feel bad, Positive Viruses had the reverse effect. The show had a number of them. From the minor Reverse Flu which caused feelings of happiness and well-being even in tough times.... to the Sex Appeal (which caused everyone who was potentially attracted to the infected or of the right sexual orientation to want to fuck them completely) and Luck (where everything you did ended up benefiting you, even if it didn't make sense. Also the only known counteragent to the Sex Appeal virus). Other known Viruses were Charisma and Inspiration. Most Posi-viruses were short lived and burnt out quickly.

 This scientist had managed to actually create these Positive viruses. As well as an agent which could be used to turn the viruses into it's chronic form. As well as a super-posi-virus which mixed elements of the previous ones. Plus new positive viruses, like the related viruses of Coolness and Popularity.
