You weren't anything special, at least in your own opinion.  You had a decent job as a mailroom clerk in Star Technologies.  You were looking around for something better-paying that wasn't as boring, but for now you were sticking with the job.  You had a few friends there, and got to meet interesting people in the form of scientists advancing new technologies, so it wasn't completely uninteresting.  (Granted, the more advanced language tended to make your eyes glaze over.  You were smart, but you weren't a scientist.)  

 

You didn't have anything resembling a romantic relationship.  You were heterosexual in preference, but the only women you were interested in were fictional.  Video games, comic books, anime, cartoons... You only prefered the drawn and the digital.  And you were fine with that.  When most people asked, you tended to describe yourself as asexual.  Technically true, since nobody real appealed to you.  

 

That night, you were working late, busily sorting mail for the next day's deliveries.  When you got done, you started to head home.  When you passed a certain laboratory, though... 

 

"RUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUN!!" screamed a pantsless scientist as he ran for his life.  

 

You stared for a long moment.  Slowly, the idea sank in that if the scientist was running away while screaming in terror, perhaps you should as well.  

 

Pity you didn't have the idea sooner.
