To Jafar and Jasmine there was nothing easier than replacing her father as the rulers of the country. The only problem was the Sultan's health. For a fat old man he was quite spry and energetic, which meant that even if they did marry right away Jafar won't be made Sultan until a few years later. Fortunately, the sorcerer already had a plan.

They wouldn't kill him, as they didn't want to risk the chance of a possible civil war. However it would be easy to add something in his food so that when Jasmine and Jafar announce their impending wedding the Sultan himself will insist that Jafar takes over.
